MATTHEW OATEN

MATTHEW OATEN

MATTHEW OATEN was born in rural Bedforshire, in 1985. After a brief period of denial, rebellion, and laborious jobs, Matthew realised that his future lay in making films, and so he packed his bags and went to study in Bath then on to Bournemouth. Four years later, he emerged with a love for art, film, animation, and a 1st class BA Hons in Interactive Media.

After spouts experimenting in user interaction, motion detected video installations, interactive story telling, photography, nerdy conversations with friends and one year's spell at a busy production facility, he now lectures at a London college. He is a skilled director, editor and videographer, and is currently obsessed with learning all there is to know about lighting.

Matthew is a self confessed (yet personable!) control freak, who needs to be involved at every level in the production process, with most of his projects to date relying on a skeleton crew, and lots and lots of hard work. Most comfortable behind the camera, but not averse to being in front of it (acting in a series of short films for artist Laura Clarke) he aims to always evidence the author, and has a passion for the autonomous, the strange, the subconscious, the hand rendered, and the beautiful and strange creatures that are humans.

He is currently directing his first project for Stonedog, and he is the DOP, principal camera and lighting designer on the Joji Hirota music video.
